Any true and dedicated fan should know the story behind Midnight Sun, but for those of you who’ve somehow missed it, we’ll give you a brief recap. After Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight saga was released, Stephanie Meyer was working on a new project to retell the whole story from Edward’s perspective. The first of these books was called Midnight Sun. Sometime in the summer of 2008, an unfinished manuscript was illegally leaked onto the Internet, to the dismay of the author and excitement of many fans. On her official website, Stephanie Meyer posted somewhat of a rant about the ways this leak had violated her as a person and an author and questioned whether she could continue writing. In the post the claims to have concluded that her fans have a right to read what is posted and the partial draft is now available on the website, but the novel is on hold indefinitely. Having read it myself, Midnight Sun is definitely worth the read and should be continued. Though it is the exact same story, changing the perspective adds an entirely new dimension and allows us to better understand how the love between Edward and Bella came to be.The question remains, if and when we will ever see a completed novel. Meyer recently released her new book, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, which is about the experience of one of the newborns in Eclipse. However, no more has been said about Midnight Sun. Some speculate that as success continues with the original series, between book and movie sales, that the project will remain on hold until things slow down. Many critics say this is a plot by Meyer to drag out the success of Twilight as long as possible. Then again, perhaps she truly was too heartbroken by the leak to go on. In the end, though, I think the right amount of money can heal any broken heart.
